Changing Regulations Open the Door for ADUs Eight states have severely reduced restrictions on ADUs that have historically existed. California is the leader in the U.S. with an estimated 1.5 million available ADU sites existing across residential single-family homes in California. To further illustrate the growth of ADUs in California: The number of ADUs permitted each year in California increased by more than 15,000% between 2016 and 2022, collectively resulting in 83,865 ADUs permitted. As of 2022, 19% of all housing units produced in California — nearly one in five homes — is an ADU. California is also speeding up approval times, as all ADU approvals must be completed within 60 days. The state has also made all single-family zoned land approved for ADUs.
